Sad replanning

1 min read

People asked me for Rockbot 2.

I listened. I wanted.

I then asked for help. Just a little, just some ideas, a few drafts.

No one answered. Not a single one.

This is a one person project, no matter what I do. And this person here started on a new job that takes 9h/day and lots of effort, meaning no free time to create graphics.

Unless I win the lottery and have money to pay an artist/designer, a Rockbot 2 won’t exist. What I will do is keep pushing slowly some updates and improvements in the game core, change some features and invest a lot in the editor.

Want Rockbot 2? Then start making graphics, mockups or ideas, even if you just draw with a pencil, and send me to protoman@upperland.net.

But Rockbot 1.1 and 1.2 WILL happen.

Hello. I am the developer of Rockbot, a free game inspirated in classic Megaman with some new features. The project code is open-source and counts with an editor so people can create their own games or expand over the default one.

One problem I need help with, is that I want to get rid of all copyrighted material and create art from the ground; but I am a software engeneer, not an artist, thus creating pixel art is not an easy task for me.

I want to ask you to join my cause and take a bit of your time to take a look and maybe help me out in this project or allowing me to use your previous work on it.

I've paused Rockbot code development for a while after we launched our first 1.0 alpha build.
I will use this time to review some concepts, ideas and characters of the game, also, I'm learning how to use Paint Tool Sai and drawing lots of concept-art and designs. I also could use critiques and suggestions, so please, do not be shy and talk loud and clear what do you think could be improved in the game and art.

And to finish: anyone willing to help is always welcome ;)

Taking the opportunity given by the file-format chances, we are starting the complete rewrite of Rockbot in C++. This decision was being matured a long time ago, and basically, is because:

confusion in keeping a ANSWI C code organized
good support for C++ in our chosen platforms to port
coding simplicity thanks to heritage, hash tables and vectors
It will take a time to adapt all again, but we are sure that this will lead to much faster development from now on.

Truth be said, I'm no artist, I'm a programmer/developer.
I work hard on Rockbot's code, and it is really starting to become a playiable game with feature parity to Megaman 2, I try to do some editing in graphics but I lack not only the knowledge, but mostly the artistic inspiration. My wife works with Corel Draw and creates some art, but turning it to pixels is not easy, and I'm kind of getting tired of people bashing my game because most of the graphics are just ripoffs...

So I am asking for help, anyone willing to participate on my project is welcome!

The background:
Rockbot is a multi-platform game, runs on PC (Linux and Windows), PS2, Dingoo (Dingux), but can be ported to more platforms like Machintosh, Android, Dreamcast, PSP and others (I lack the hardware, the port should be trivial). It is ispirated in Megaman, the story happens around Megaman 9 timeline, but in a different city, Kyoto, and with different characters.
